Do You Know What This Church Teaches? Part 1

*This was definitely too long, and so I had to break it up into different parts. I’m pretty close to my word count as-is*

On Sunday, after church, we walked out into the parking lot. I heard Mariah say something along the lines of “anti-Calvinism, cool!” That might not have actually been what she said. In fact, I’m probably paraphrasing and terribly misquoting. I definitely heard anti-Calvinism, and I saw these fliers that I will later refer to as pamphlets. They were written by either a nameless person or a nameless organization. I hope for the sake of Bryan/College Station that it was only a nameless person who is so confused about Calvinism. So anyways, here’s my thoughts on this pamphlet with Mariah’s added input for where they got the verses about  “partiality”.

It was entitled “Do You Really Know What This Church Teaches?” Well, my first answer was “yes, yes I do”. We kept reading. Mariah and I are just like that. It opens with Col 2:8 which in my Bible says “See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ”. That’s the New American Standard Bible. The paper says “Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ”. Okay, at least we’re close here. As far as I can tell, Westminster doesn’t do that. Moving along.

They then state things that the Westminister Confession teaches and what’s wrong with it. Let’s just go through them for fun.

1.) God only Chose “Some” sinners to be saved. They dispute this by saying that scripture disagrees. They list Acts 10:34-35 “And opening his mouth, Peter said: ‘I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality, but in every nation the man who fears Him and does what is right, is welcome to Him”, Romans 2:11 “For there is no partiality with God” (which goes on to say 12For all who have sinned without the Law will also perish without the Law; and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law. Sounds to me like that’s not talking about being saved. It’s talking about judgement), Romans 10:12 “For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call upon him” (okay, so everyone who calls upon him, not everyone), Ephesians 6:9 “And masters, do the same things to them, and give up threatening, knowing that both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him (this is actually talking about how God sees everyone equally, this is also not about being saved), Colossians 3:25 “For he who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done, and that without partiality (again, JUDGEMENT! Everyone would be judged equally if it were not for Christ’s sacrifice that saves those who God calls to Him), and 1 Peter 1:17 “And if you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each man’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay upon earth” (see my above arguments). Really, it looks like they just looked up partiality in the back of the Bible and listed every verse without reading them.

They then say “if indeed God just happened to choose you > this would be called “regeneration” – Something magical has to happen to you, otherwise you are not able to Respond to God’s call according to this doctrine. And “IF” and “When” this Regeneration happens to you, only then you have the ability to respond! (Does this sound like a loving God?) Yes. Yes it does. God reaching out and calling us when He could have just washed His hands of us all definitely sounds like a loving God to me. There are many passages that disagree with such a ridiculous assumption Jesus says in John 12:47 “And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world”. – Notice the word “IF” and “Save the World”? So according to this belief the people that are NOT Chosen by Jehovah are lost. Does this sound like the God in the Bible? No it does NOT. John 3:16 “For God so loved the WORLD (Everyone)… Oh my, where to start? Let’s go in chronological order. As far as I’m concerned, one cannot be called unless the Spirit calls him/her. I’m not exactly sure what “Regeneration” is, but we can’t come to God. God has to call us. Remember Paul? He wasn’t seeking God, God stopped him on the road to Damascus and CALLED him! Alright, now time to tackle the claim they make about John 12:47. Let’s read 48-49: “He who rejects Me, and does not receive My saying, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day. For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me commandment, what to say, and what to speak”. Wow. That definitely sounds like there’s going to be some judgment. Next they quote John 3:16. Notice how they leave off the most important part of the verse. “That He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life”. That doesn’t say everyone. That says whoever believes in Him.
